For those at a loss as to what to buy a book collector at the holidays...

Collectors of Indian treaties will be interested in lots 209 to 214 containing an even dozen early 19th century treaties.  Such items tend to come up in groups.  The last large assortment of treaties sold in the second Siebert sale in 1999 for $18,000.  Those treaties were somewhat later.

Sentimental book collectors may be attracted to lot 474, The United States National Almanac printed in Philadelphia, a bound volume containing the issues for 1825-28.  In this volume is an early appearance of Clement Moore’s “Twas the night before Christmas.”  This copy and the other information contained in these almanacs are estimated at $2,000 to $3,000.  The holidays are fast approaching.

For imprint collectors, presidential scholars and those interested in black history there is The Will of General George Washington published in Alexandria in 1800.  His will contained a provision which emancipated his slaves.  It is estimated at $1,000 to $1,500 and is an increasingly important document.

For collectors of musical Americana there is lot 386, a Bound volume containing 33 engraved and 13 manuscript titles of Sheet Music.  This material dates to circa 1800 and was printed and/or prepared at New York, Philadelphia and Baltimore.  A complete list is available upon request from Swann.

The entire contents of Swann’s sale #1988 are available online at their website www.swanngalleries.com and of course in the AED.  On AE such auctions are searchable by keywords and modifers and are checked against members’ posted wants lists every day.  Viewing is December 1st, 2nd and 3rd .  For inquiries regarding items in this sale contact Jeremy Markowitz at 212 254-4710 ext 27 or by email at jmarkowitz@swanngalleries.com
