Rare Books and Photographs from Bernard J. Shapero Rare Books

Tanzanian photograph by Hector Acebes.

Item 17 is a copy of explorer Richard Burton's first book: Goa, and the Blue Mountains; or, six months of sick leave. Burton had served with the British military in India prior, so he was well-acquainted with the area when he went on sick leave. Over the next 40 years, Burton would explore many more places, mainly in the Middle East and Africa, though one trip would take him to America's Great Salt Lake. His first book was published in 1851. £1,850 (US $2,955).

Item 129 is one of the photographs, Tanzania, by Hector Acebes. The photographer has signed this 1953 picture on the back. The unusual proportions show a tiny giraffe, a somewhat larger bush, and a huge sky full of clouds. Click the thumbnail image above to see this dramatic photograph. £3,250 (US $5,192).
