Catalogue Review – Oak Knoll Catalogue 251
Those with an interest in school and children’s books may want to read Charles Carpenter’s History of American Schoolbooks. It covers New England and other primers, McGuffey’s readers, and more. Item 79. $30. Speaking of McGuffey, Item 257 is The Story of the McGuffeys by Alice McGuffey Ruggles. It’s a biography of the McGuffey family. $30. And number 80 is Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures Under Ground. This is a facsimile of Carroll’s original manuscript for “Alice in Wonderland.” $85.
Item 10, A Szazesztendos Athenaeun, answers the challenge “name a word containing three Z’s.” Actually, it’s a history of the Hungarian firm Athenaeum Publishers. $45. A truly odd title is Cyril Clemens’ Mark Twain and Richard M. Nixon. What did these two have in common? Were they both humorists? Agnew was kind of funny, but it’s hard to think of anything amusing about Nixon. Were both paranoid? That depends on whether Twain/Clemens was paranoid. Apparently it’s about an exchange of letters about Twain between the author and Nixon. If you want to know what Nixon thought of Twain, you’ll just have to buy the book. Item 415 from 1970. $17.50.
