Roald Amundsen's account of reaching the South Pole.

Item 21 is a brochure from the Canadian Pacific Railway headed Low Rate One Way Excursions in Canadian Pacific Railway Tourist Sleeping Cars to the Pacific Coast without Change, circa 1898. Why would one want to go on an excursion west but not come back? The explanation for the one-way trips is seen in the date. This was the “Gold Train.” It provided transportation from places like Boston via Montreal on to the west coast. From their, the one-way guests could proceed north to make their fortunes during the Klondike Gold Rush. $500.
