Greenland is a foreboding place as Karl Koldewey discovered.
Item 73 is what Eigl refers to as "the most famous of all travel plate books." It is David Roberts' The Holy Land, from 1842-43. It contains 120 hand-colored lithograph plates displaying views of the Holy Land and surrounding territory. Roberts traveled through Egypt, Syria, Arabia and the Holy Land in 1838-39, just before the dawn of photography, determined to bring back views of remnants of antiquity to the English people who were mostly unfamiliar with them. Roberts was a skilled artist who intended to create a collection of images of these lands finer than ever seen before, and few would doubt his success in the mission. €92,000 (US $127,524).
Item 41 is Die zweite deutsche Nordpolarfahrt in den Jahren 1869 und 1870 unter Führung des Kapitän Karl Koldewey. Captain and author Karl Koldewey led two German expeditions into the Arctic. This is an account of the second one, in 1869-70. They did not make it to the Pole, but the expedition gathered much in the way of surveying and scientific information about Greenland, where they spent most of their journey. €3,600 (US $4,990).
