Here is a look at America during the middle of the 19th century: The United States Illustrated; in views of city and country. It was edited by Charles A. Dana, a noted journalist of the era and abolitionist. It comes in two volumes, the east covering mostly coastal areas but as far west as Niagara, and the west describes areas generally thought of as being in the Midwest today, but including California. Despite its name, it contains mostly textual descriptions of the various areas, but many are also illustrated. Item 152. £3,000 (US $4,780).
