Description Mr. Penrose wrote a very important book, Travel and Discovery in the Renaissance, that was published in 1952. This book details the evolution of travel in pursuit of discovery during the period 1420 to 1620. It remains today an essential first book to read for those who wish to understand this period and the underlying and relating collectible materials.

Mr. Penrose's own collection was simply the mirror image of the book he wrote. He was not obsessed with condition. He was more concerned with content. The sale of this collection warrants inclusion in this database because, in addition to collecting, he also studied and wrote about his materials. His collection was small by the standards of the day but it was very focused. When you pursue specific titles with a clear purpose you build a meaningful collection. Boies Penrose did this.
