| Description | John Howell - Books was begun by John Howell around 1912 and continued and elaborated by his son Warren who joined him during the depression. Very few American dealers ever thought to do what the Howells accomplished. That was to combine a knowledge of the Americana field with an equally deft touch with the earliest European materials. Today, among the Howell catalogues, are those that deal exclusively with the American west and others that deal only in the earliest European manuscript material. Only Dr. A. S. W. Rosenbach and Lathrop Harper demonstrated a similar command of such diverse fields in the United States in the 20th century. John Howell books was located in San Francisco, California. John Howell died in 1956, while Warren passed on in 1984. The bookstore closed with Warren's passing, but many of the next generation of booksellers cut their teeth in this venerable shop. |
