Description Goodspeed's Book Shop occupies an exceptional place among American book dealers of the 20th century. Founded in Boston in 1898 by Charles Goodspeed and continuing in business under his son George into the 1990s, the firm issued a variety of catalogues (608), occasional "lists," a regular publication titled the Flying Quill and a monthly publication called This Month at Goodspeed's. For consistency and variety of presentation no other American dealer approaches either the breath of its presentations or its longevity.
Scope of Text The Goodspeed approach was to sell books and they priced their inventory accordingly. In this respect they were similar to Wright Howes of Chicago. Many dealers today price their books for the one buyer who will pay the maximum price. The Goodspeeds chose to price their material to regularly move from their shelves to those of the libraries and collectors who relied upon them for excellent material at reasonable prices.
