Brooklyn Antiquarian Book Fair September 8-10

The Bigger, Better Brooklyn Antiquarian Book Fair

Marvin Getman, the trade show impresario, is continuing to build a book buying and bookselling community around his Brooklyn Book Fair, now in its fourth year and scheduled for the 8th to the 10th this month at the Brooklyn Expo Center.  The shift of bookselling from open shops to online listings has given book fairs added importance as they become the point of human interaction for they who prefer to buy and sell in person.  For Mr. Getman, book fairs, which for many years were in decline, are a trend that is strengthening.

Book fairs fall into two categories; those associated with a dealer organization and those open to the entire field.  Mr. Getman’s fairs fall into the second category and attract an appealing and eclectic group that changes from show to show.  For Mr. Getman this will be his largest fair to date and the first that is crossing the one hundred exhibitor threshold; 108 at last count.  This a terribly big deal.

So in a few years we can predict that Mr. Getman’s fairs will begin to attract their own shadow fairs.  And there is a certain justice in it for Mr. Getman began as an organizer of shadow fairs and is now reaping the benefits of years of work and experience to be creating his first major fair.

Congratulations.
