A major report concerning the Colorado was issued by the Department of the Interior in 1950 entitled A Survey of the Recreational Resources of the Colorado River Basin. This survey covers plants and animals, geology, pre-history, and more about the Grand Canyon and other canyons in the area, including Dinosaur National Monument. Along with 119 photos are 15 folding maps in a back pocket. Item 461. $85.
An interesting collection of papers is contained in the Memorial Volume of The Transcontinental Excursion of 1912… compiled by the American Geographical Society. An international group of geographers traveled through the American West that year and their papers, some in English, others in German, French, and Italian, were compiled into this volume. Item 2. $35.
Another interesting item is The Progress of the Land Problems in the United States… by Kuro Nakashima. This was reprinted from a journal published by Hakkaido Imperial University in Japan in 1924. One chapter focused on land problems of aliens, Japanese in particular, and state-sanctioned discrimination. Of course Japanese Americans in the west would feel the hand of state discrimination more painfully two decades later after the outbreak of war. Item 79. $45.
Collectors of the great San Francisco earthquake may not have Hermann Schussler’s The Water Supply of San Francisco before, during and after The Earthquake of April 18th, 1906, and the Subsequent Conflagration. Written by the Chief Engineer of the Spring Valley Water Company, it describes the city’s water system in detail and the damages done by the earthquake. Item 267. $225.
