Martin Johnson Heade was a 19th century artist of the school of luminism. It wasn't called that at the time, but was later given to a style of landscape art that featured special effects of light. Heade made his way around America, from New England and New York in his early years, across the country to Chicago, St. Louis, and San Francisco, and eventually to Florida. Along the way, he traveled to Brazil, only the second American painter to work there. Sunset: A Scene in Brazil, is from this period of his career in the 1860s.
