Voyages and Travels from Reg and Philip Remington

Item 101 recounts the adventures of an inland traveler: Voyages and Travels of an Indian Interpreter and Trader, Describing the Manners and Customs of the North American Indians. Author John Long was an Englishman who came to trade in Canada, primarily along the St. Lawrence and Lake Ontario. He eventually made his way as far north as Hudson Bay, trading furs and learning the customs and languages of the Indians. During the American Revolution, he fought on the side of pro-British Indians, and a few years after that didn't work out, returned to England without much to show for it. Perhaps we should say without much materially to show for it, as he did bring back the knowledge needed to publish this book in 1791. £1,500 (US $2,975).

Item 2 recounts one of the best known of all voyages, though not one noted for its discoveries or triumphs. Item 2 is a Voyage to the South Seas...for the Purpose of Conveying Breadfruit to the West Indies... This is Captain William Bligh's 1792 account of the famed mutiny on the Bounty, when he and a few loyal crewmen were cast adrift on a small boat. Somehow, they managed to navigate 3,500 miles of open seas to find rescue. A decade later, Bligh returned to successfully bring breadfruit trees from Tahiti to the West Indies. £9,500 (US $18,839).
