Maps, Atlases and Views from Donald Heald Rare Books

It would be in 1808 that the first complete state map for North Carolina would be issued. This map is titled The First Actual Survey of the State of North Carolina. Prepared by Jonathan Price and John Strother, who undertook the massive task of surveying the state, from the swamps of the coast to the inland mountains. The state is divided into counties, with hand-colored boundaries. This exceptional map is exceptionally rare, with none apparently appearing on the market in the last forty years. Item 63. $145,000.

Item 3 is the Jean Beaurain and Georg Frentzel Carte von dem Hafen under Stadt Boston. This is described as the only German map of Boston from revolutionary times. The map was published in 1776 and depicts the Siege of Boston, where George Washington routed the British. $37,500.

Item 78 is a set of what has been described as "the greatest and finest atlas ever published." It is the 11-volume Atlas major of Jan Blaeu. It contains 594 contemporary hand-colored maps, plans and plates. Twenty-three American maps are contained in volume 11 though the atlas goes back to the 17th century. This set contains ten volumes (2-11) from the 1662 first edition, volume 1 from the 1665 second edition. $700,000.
