George Catlin's Native American Journey

George Catlin's Native American Journey

Catlin’s desire to paint larger subjects with more meaning allowed the “civilized” world in the 1840s to view Native Americans in their "natural" habitat. The Renwick Gallery’s display educates the twenty first century public about the same Native American personalities, manners and customs, and habitats that Catlin captured in his artwork. The salon exhibit style immerses the viewer in Catlin’s world, one that is as unique as Catlin’s vision.

The Renwick Gallery is located on Pennsylvania Avenue and 17th Street NW in Washington, D.C. For further information on the exhibit please visit www.americanart.si.edu/catlin/index.html.
