Churchill in Word and Image As Collected By Carolyn L. Smith

AT: Well, we’ve talked for all this time and now I realize that we haven’t touched on your background. Is there anything you’d like to say about your life or biography?

CLS: Well, let’s see. I grew up in Nebraska and came to New York in 1963. I majored in mathematics in college. When I first came to New York I taught math. Then I worked for a number of years as a writer and editor for banking services, producing seminar materials and the like. I do a bit of not-for-profit consultation, mostly for schools and/or small arts institutions. And I have 2 grown sons and 2 granddaughters. I’m trying to raise them from early on to be book collectors. I have to say that I’m very proud that my daughter-in-law now collects Dorothy Sayers material.

AT: Seeing you, I have to say that I find it almost unbelievable to hear that you are a grandmother. One last question: is there anything else you’d like to say about The Grolier Club that you feel didn’t get said before?

CLS: Just that we would love for people to know that the exhibits on the ground floor are always open to the public, no appointment necessary. The Research Library is open by appointment and it is a fabulous resource for bibliographic information, information regarding book collectors, and information about particular kinds of books and prints. And we often have speeches and public events that are open to the general public. The web site is really the best tool to use to investigate our resources.

“Churchilliana From The Collection of Carolyn L. Smith” is on view to the general public by prior appointment only (as it’s on the members-only second floor) until March 14, 2003. The Grolier Club is located at 47 East 60th Street, New York, NY, 10022, (212) 838-6690. They are open from Monday till Saturday, 10 am till 5 pm. Admission is free. Their website is accessible at www.grolierclub.org. Note: All images used in conjunction with this article are used Courtesy of The Grolier Club, New York.
