Item 65 offers a photographic look at one of America's poorest areas at the height of its most difficult time, the Great Depression. Doris Ulmann was a photographer from New York of healthy means. Julia Peterkin was a native of South Carolina who grew up with a black nursemaid and later married the owner of one of the most substantial plantations in the state. Together, the two set off in a chauffeur-driven limousine to explore the country around her estate, along the Gullah area of South Carolina. Ulmann's photographs give us a look at the lives of poor blacks trying to survive off the land in these most trying of times. The two published their account in 1933.
