Rudolf Cronau was a journalist for the German magazine Die Gartenlaube when he was sent to America in 1881 to write articles about what he found. Cronau traveled extensively through the U.S., to New York, Niagara Falls, and Washington, to Minneapolis, along the Mississippi, and on to the Dakota Territory, where he drew portraits of Indian leaders. He went on to Yellowstone, Santa Fe, and San Francisco, where he drew the interior of a Chinese restaurant. During the winter, he moved south to Louisiana and Florida, but by the following summer he again headed west to Texas and Oregon. He also hit Colorado, Utah, Arizona and Wyoming along the way, and California once more, where he drew a coach and six horses driving through a redwood tree. He had planned to also visit South America, but ill health forced his return to Germany. He wrote three books about his adventures, including this illustrated work, Von Wunderland zu Wunderland. It consists of two volumes, published in 1885 and 1887. $15,000.
