Auction Update Review
The Year Begins
January 2nd, 2011
The Year Ahead
The year begins with both passion and fear residing within the same breast. The impulse to buy will be strong but the market uncertain. It's inevitable that material will be repriced but unclear how this plays out. Beware if the percentage of unsold lots rises. This means that reserves are above the market.
Ephemera looks to have another banner year. This category, long under-appreciated and under-valued, will continue to increase if for no other reason than that it is still cheap and often very appealing.
Secondary manuscript material selling in out-of-the-way places should also do well. Research should well repay the effort. More important manuscript material may not reach the levels attained a few years back however. For buyers at auction this means a greater likelihood of bidding against reserves rather than against other potential buyers. Such reserves can mask significant weakness.
Maps should continue to be of wide interest although prices may be soft.
It's a year to be careful but the opportunities will be plentiful.
Best wishes for 2011.
