Later, representatives of the firm reorganizing and redecorating the club provided an explanation of the work in progress. The club is renewing its facilities and plans to use them for an extended range of activities. Great attention was given to social aspects of the renovations. Friends of many years who meet at the club in the late afternoon to swap stories and share a libation expressed interest in the timely completion of the work.

What was not discussed was the club's most important contribution to the literary arts, its publications, lecture series and regular discussion groups. They provide continuing opportunities for ideas to be expressed and discussion and argument to ensue. The lifeblood of this club is clearly ideas, as often expressed in words as in print.

Ms. Cohen, club manager, speaking to this writer, explained the institution this way. "The club is a friendly place born of shared interests in printing and books. We have a distinguished history and are determined to have a distinguished future."
