Case Auctions: 1,300 lots over 2 days

Look around!

Case Auctions are beginning their two-day 2026 Winter Fine Art & Antiques Sale on January 31st, that will continue February 1st.  Between the two days they are offering more than 1,300 lots, divided in 2 catalogues. Both catalogues are linked to this article. Both auctions will be called at their Knoxville Gallery. As to bidding, you can participate online.

These sales are drawn from fine Southern estates as well as private and museum collections. When you begin to browse the lots, you quickly notice their mix suggests a high-quality regional sale. Such sales have long been the gold standard for educated bidders. Fifty years ago, you knew them by reputation and were followed by mavens. These days they are somewhat unusual. We’re lucky they’re continuing this auction approach.

The norm in the auction field is to organize lots by category. They do it differently. They spend months evaluating and writing up lots and assign them to subject categories. Then they publish interactive lists that create a personalized version.  For Day 1, if your interest is photography, they are offering 6 lots, bookcases 2, posters, prints and multiples 36, books, manuscripts & archives 23, historical & political memorabilia 16, and maps & atlases 9. You then click on those categories that appeal. It’s both fun and efficient.

For Day 2, they provide the same approach.

Be aware, they often start the bidding at modest levels. If you want to win, prepare to chase.

For reference, here's the list for the 1/31/26 sale. The numbers before each category indicate the quantity of lots that relate to it.
