Important Civil War Documents and Items from Seth Kaller

Here is a very brief note from the President to Secretary of State Seward, asking him to call the cabinet together for a meeting at 7:00 in the evening of March 5, 1862. While Lincoln did not mention it in his note, the purpose was to discuss his proposal for compensated emancipation. He wanted the loyal border states to outlaw slavery, but in return, the slaveholders would be compensated. Lincoln believed this would bring the war to a speedier conclusion, but ultimately, the border states showed little interest, and compensated emancipation only ever took place in Washington D.C. Of course, later that year, Lincoln would authorize a much larger, uncompensated emancipation, to apply to all states in rebellion against the Union. Price on request.

On July 1, 1863, the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg, Alexander Gardiner snapped a photograph of the battlefield near McPherson Woods. He titled it A Harvest of Death, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (click the thumbnail image above left). There were still two more days to go, but the strewn bodies already clearly showed the horrors of this war. $5,600.
