Item 39 is the 1688 first French translation of Miguel de Molinos' book on Quietism, Recueuil de diverses pieces concernant le Quietisme... Quietism was a Catholic movement started by the Spanish Priest de Molinos that caught on mostly in France. It borrowed from the mystic religions of the East, teaching that perfection was achieved by internal passivity, ridding oneself of a sense of self and becoming one with the Divine. The philosophy was condemned by Catholic authorities as contrary to its teachings concerning good and evil in the world. Undoubtedly, the Church was also not pleased by the concept of achieving a connection to God by going around Church authority. Pope Innocent XI published a papal bull condemning the movement in 1687, and many of its followers were later imprisoned. This book was published in 1688, the year following the movement's banishment. €3,130 (US $4,480).
