A Varied List from Antiquariaat Forum and Asher Rare Books

Item 43 is a large collection of material from the library of Hendrik Lorentz. It includes both material he wrote and numerous offprints of articles written by others, many of which were never offered for sale but available only directly from the author. Among his own material is a copy of Lorentz's doctoral dissertation. Much of his own work was accomplished while a professor at the University of Leiden. A few items date as late as 1939, a decade after Lorentz's death, as there is some material published posthumously along with items prepared by his daughter, physicist Geertruida Haas-Lorentz. Price on request.

Item 73 is Reis naar de kolonie van misdadigers, Nieuw-Zuid-Wallis, by Pieter Os, published in 1853. This is a Dutch children's book about a convict's transportation to the penal colony in New South Wales, Australia, an odd topic for a children's book. Evidently, it was supposed to encourage children to avoid a life of crime while teaching them about Australia. It describes the aborigines as being only semi-human, though some are treated better by the author than others. The appendix describes gold discoveries in Victoria. $4,750.
