Description Sybil Andrews CPE (British/Canadian, 1898-1992) The Timber Jim (Coppel SA 21) Linocut printed in Chinese orange, permanent blue, crimson, viridian and Chinese blue, 1932, an early richly inked impression, on oriental laid tissue, signed, titled and numbered 3/60 in pencil, with margins, 222 x 384mm (8 3/4 x 15 1/8in)(B)
Comments For The Timber Jim Andrews regulated the colour density and texture by varying the hand pressure on the blocks. In Print Book I, 1932-1933, the artist noted that the Chinese orange should "not [be] too intense on [the] foreground", the Permanent blue (and not cobalt) to be printed "gentle pale on far hedge" and the Chinese blue to be used "sparingly, not to give a deep blue but to darken the tone". Stephen Coppel, Linocuts of the Machine Age: Claude Flight and the Grosvenor School (Aldershot: Scolar Press, 1995), 112.
